"Guernica" (1966) by Leonardo Balada (b. 1934)
This is really everything a piece of music should be. It's interesting, contrasting, cinematic and has form without the form driving the piece. Balada, like Penderecki (who is the person I always think of when I hear this piece) went through a couple phases in his composition before he found the aesthetic he liked; I think with this he definitely found something good.
