The Pallid Bat Antrozous pallidus is a North American bat species native to deserts and mountains throughout the western US and up into Canada. It is insectivorous, meaning it eats insects and other bugs, and unlike bats that capture food in flight this species prefers to hunt prey on the ground. In this video, one of our male bats is seen feeding on a darkling beetle larva, full of nutrients, protein, and fat.
Near the end of the video you can see the bat yawn and expose its sharp teeth and large canines, used to bite through the hard exoskeletons of the arthropods it eats.

The bat exhibit will be opening soon in the Desert Zone in Ecosystems. Ecosystems is a FREE permanent exhibit. More info: http://www.californiasciencecenter.org/Exhibits/WorldOfEcology/WorldOfEcology...
