Senator Manuel Roxas II defended his girlfriend, broadcaster Korina Sanchez, against insinuations by Senate President Manuel Villar that she was using her radio program to destroy his presidential bid by linking him to the road to nowhere controversy.

I dont know why he had to hit somebody who was just doing her job regardless of who would be implicated, Roxas told The STAR even as he challenged the Senate chief to a debate.

The issue was in the newspapers. Why should he involve professionals who are just doing their job? Why would he single out Korina? Roxas said.

Villar earlier accused his potential opponents in the 2010 elections of trying to destroy him, and though he did not name Roxas and Sanchez, it was apparent that he was taking a swipe at the two. He said Sanchez was trying to boost Roxas presidential ambition with her critical radio statements against the Senate president.

Villar is the standard bearer of the Nacionalista Party while Roxas is the Liberal Partys likely choice for presidential candidate in 2010.

Sometimes there are people who beat you up every day, saying many wrong things and lies. I dont think thats right. Its difficult when you hide under someones skirt. I dont like to be treated this way. I am careful about my name in politics, I dont want it stained, Villar said in Filipino.

Roxas said he was hurt by Villars insinuations against Sanchez. If he (Villar) wants we can debate on the floor every day, but he should spare her, Roxas said in Filipino.

The broadcaster herself is very open about her disgust for Villar in her radio program over dzMM and even dared the Senate chief to confront her.
Roxas, along with Senators Panfilo Lacson, Loren Legarda, Jamby Madrigal, Benigno Aquino III, Rodolfo Biazon and Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel Jr., has filed a resolution calling on the Senate to investigate the issue as a committee of the whole.

The issue unraveled after Lacson called his colleagues attention to a double entry in the 2008 budget for the extension of the C-5 road. Some of the senators said the questioned appropriation appeared to benefit real estate projects of a company identified with the Villar family.

But Villar denied making money out of the government projects in the areas and vowed to clear his name. People close to Villar said the Senate chief was very sensitive about funding issues.
