Bill Boll's "36 Minors" chronicles an infamous event in St. Louis punk history, remembered 27 years later as the "Bernard Bust." In 1984, city police raided the Bernard Pub during a show headlined by the Austin hardcore group The Offenders. 36 minors were arrested for drinking alcohol, and four others were arrested on various other charges including lewd conduct. The event generated front-page coverage in both local newspapers, which displayed a shallow, cartoon-like understanding of the alternative music and fashions of the time.
Love it, Bill! I was stranded at the AmVets on South Grand that night, carless. A woman artist heard me on the pay phone, trying to get a ride to "the Offenders show," and she loved the sound of it, and struck up a conversation. She gave me a ride home, and introduced me to mail art. But, not a ride to the show!
