I made this tutorial for a presentation I gave a while back about animation. I might do a couple more if there are any requests.

  • Something I was wondering, if you have a stationary object that still has complex movement(hair blowing in wind) do you also draw the stages to one paper before you start? In those types of animations it becomes hard to see the spacing. I ask this because I'm trying to pull off a whip motion to a character's hair and it becomes difficult when I try to to picture the spacing in the in-betweens. I have so far drawn the stages to a piece of paper bent from the middle.

  • @Dinoslay I think i would draw some lines that would represent different strands of hair.and have those react to the 'wind'. In the second stage i would draw their volume. I almost always do the movement first and volume later. I can't focus on both at the same time.

  • That is really cool!!!!!!! =) :) can you try animating some animals?

  • @ReesePruitt yep I can do that. I'l upload some of the walkcycles of my new animation soon.

  • How would you go about syncing an animation to music or a voice on paper without hearing it as you go as you can with computer animation?

  • @BlueMaroonSS I'm planning on making a couple of more tutorials including how to sync your audio with your footage or vice versa. I'm sure other people would like to know it as well.

    best regards,

  • I have a question. What is the name of your animation ruler?

  • Thanks for showing me a way how traditional animation is done. I was really curious how animators maintain consistency between frames. Overlaying the sheets explains how that can be made easier.

  • LIKE A THOUSAND TIMES OVER. Thank you so much! But is it still possible to traditionally animate if you don't have a lightbox?

  • I had no idea there were light tables... now the mysteries are solved, lol.

  • I loved it and it helped a lot, but where do you get the equipment?

  • make an isometric view walk cicle for a game character, it need have an front and back straight up and straight down versions..DAMN so many work, its hard to keep it alike in all different views

  • this is absolutely awesomee!

but where can i find the light box, holed papers also the drawing rulers?? :S

  • @studiojulio Thanks, I'll try that. The movement and it's spacing obviously comes first. There's a certain order to it.

  • do you work for disney? cause you are awesome :)
