Some friends and I took my father's video camera into the John Lennon moment of silence vigil in Central Park a few days after he was murdered in December 1980. We got some pretty good interviews. Shot with 8mm film camera. Completely unedited
thanks so much for sharing this. im actually in this, between the 1:18 and 1:48 point. im the tall blonde haired kid wearing a plaid coat. i feel like ive just seen a ghost. thanks for posting.
@commentoria there were people around in general near the Dakota, but the Dec. 14 gathering was announced by Yoko and facilitated by the city. Mayor Koch was there. The weather was very warm on Dec. 8, above 60 that night, somewhat cooler later in the week.
I'm writing a book and I need some information. Were people hanging out at the park for the whole week Dec 9-14 or only on the 14th? Also what was the weather like that week if you know.
I can't think of anything that could happen these days that could bring a crowd of over 100,000 to complete silence for 10 whole minutes. It was remarkable. I was just a child but I'll always remember it. With cellphones, etc it could never happen again I'm sure
Phenomenal footage! I didn't go into the park but stood on CPW by the Dakota. Some guy from WABC tv interviewed me but I have never seen the footage. You don't have any footage of the crowd by the Dakota during this, do you? (Maybe a half hour before the service and maybe a half hour after it.) There's a video of WNBC that shows some of the crowd on that day on YouTube that's the closest I have found so far.
