This video was shot exactly 10 years ago at Ramingining, Arnhem Land. The purpose of this clip is two-fold: 1) to illustrate the stylistic differences of Ganalbingu manikay and yirdaki compared to the 'Miwatj' region or NE portion of Arnhem Land; 2) to demonstrate that the yirdaki component of a clan's ritual performance is 'opportunistic' these days, in that any instrument will do the job. Here, the same instrument (and player) is used for both Yirritja (Ganalbingu) and Dhuwa (Liyagalawumirr) moieties.
The occasion for this ceremony is the initiation (dhapi') of a group of young boys.
