Peroneal tendonitis is a painful condition that develops from overloading or significantly stressing the peroneal tendons. The pain can develop from acute (specific injury) or chronic conditions (such as running). The peroneal tendons run behind the outside ankle bone and attach to the outside of the foot on both sides. The tendons originate with the peroneus muscle which serves to plantar flex (point foot down) and evert (turn bottom of foot out) the foot.
Causes include excessive pronation, tight calf muscles, or running on uneven surfaces. Older individuals become more susceptible due to the tendons losing their elasticity and becoming more brittle. Symptoms include stiffness, swelling, or a burning sensation around the back of the ankle and edges of the foot.
Treatment options include rest, ice, and anti-inflammatories. The KT Tape application allows pressure to be relieved from the painful area to facilitate rest. Proprioceptive (body awareness) benefits serve to increase blood flow and help to promote the healing process.
Proper diagnosis of the source of your pain is vital to creating a treatment plan to reduce pain and improve function. Your professional medical provider has the tools and expertise to diagnose and develop a treatment plan for your specific condition.

  • boulderrunner,

What does one do for a out of place cuboid bone.

I'm suffering from peroneal tendonopathy now. and I am wondering about this.It does hurt at the cuboid when I walk on hard floors barefoot.

    Thanks

    Bobby D.

  • @SuperBobbyd13 Great question. If you'll go to kttape dot com and click the Ask an expert button on the homepage to send us an email, one of our docs will respond with specific direction for your condition.

  • Chris thanks for the video on this. I wanted to share I was suffering from this recently due to an increase in running volume.

I went to a sports Chiropractor and he noticed my cuboid bone was out of place which was causing the tendon to stretch. After adjustment it was still sore for a day or so, but now is feeling normal again. I know this isnt the cause for everyone but wanted to pass this along if there were any other runners feeling the same pain.

  • @boulderrunner thx for posting about this- I'm sure it will help other runners.

  • hey chris, can a KT Tape last 4 days without taking it off........

    for knee runners.......

  • @penavictor11 Kt tape is like any technical gear- the better you care it, apply it, the better it performs. Length of time it lasts depends on the person, application, skin type, and the environment. Here are some general guidelines:

    Foot- 1-2 days

    Knee's/joints 2-4 days

    Legs/arms: 2-5 days

    Shoulders: 2-4 days

    Back: 3-5 days

We recommend not wearing tape more than 5 days at a time. I hope that helps. thx.

  • I switched to Newton Running shoes and after 3 weeks my left outer ankle swells after running about 10k run,,they say that my foot is adapting to the new running shoe that forces you to forefoot/midfoot run and stretches the tendons. I hope so, I really like those shoes, after only 3 weeks they took away all my knee problems while running. Going to try to adapt with KT Tape, for a few weeks, if it keeps on hurting then I think Newton Shoes are not for me. Thanks for the vid.

  • Hi Chris, do you think that it can fix also a subluxation of peroneal tendons? I have a subluxation for now only sometimes and it is not frequent if I walk but I cannot do sports as run, rowing, climb etc etc.

    Thanks
