Part I of Beginner's method - Intro, Notation, and the Cross. (This is the first part of Part I. Part I is split into two segments to stay under the time limit.)

(My first tutorial by request, so I know it's not the best, I may make a revision later. This is a very, very basic beginner method, but serves as a good foundation for progressing onto more advanced methods later. More advanced tutorials will be following shortly!)

_________________________________________________________________

it's time to get out that old cube you couldn't solve, cause I finally decided to make a video on a beginner method for solving a Rubik's cube! well mostly cause the 09-10 people in the club now requested it. please contact me if you have further questions.

*if you already know how to solve a cube, then sit tight, I'll have the intermediate series up soon!

-Part I of the beginner method covers some basic cube terminology, notation, and the first step: the cross. it's quite lengthy, but the other parts following this will be shorter.

***NOTES

---Preface.

- The best way to solve it and to progress a lot better later on, is to learn how to solve it yourself. That way you'll have a much better understanding of how the cube works.

- With that being said, this beginner's method is a quick and easy to understand way to solve a cube, but not for getting the theory of solving. it's like math theorems; if you know how to derive an equation/know how it works, you'll have a much better understanding than just memorizing it.

**BUT, after learning how to solve it, one may begin to grasp how cube theory works. So still, give this beginner method a shot.
_____________

---Intro.

- Just get a cube that works, hardware/maintenance will be covered in the intermediate video series.

-Finger shortcuts will be covered later as well, so don't worry about turning it quickly.

-Scrambling/algorithm reading will be covered later, in addition to more notation.

- The method covered here will be a layer-by-layer (LBL) method. Block-building methods may be covered later.
_____________________________

Terminology.

-Six centers, twelve edges, and eight corners on a cube. Think of solving the cube as placing all the pieces in the correct places, instead of "solving stickers".

- "Yellow side" means the side with the yellow CENTER. "White side" means the side with the white center, etc.

- Facing one side of the cube, the side you directly face is the front "F" side, and so on.

- R= turn right side 90 degrees clockwise, F = turn front side 90 degrees clockwise, L = turn left side 90 degrees clockwise, et cetera.

- R' (R prime) = turn right side 90 degrees counter clockwise, F'' (F prime) = turn front side 90 degrees counter clockwise, et cetera.

- R2 = turn right side 180 degrees (same in either direction).
_______________________________

STEP 1 - Solving the cross.

- Remember to start on one color, and stick with it, in my case white. So start with the yellow side on top, the white side on the bottom.

- Solving the cross on the bottom will help you significantly later on. Cross on left is fine too, but for right now stick with cross on bottom.

- This way of solving the cross is called "Flower-method" because you put all the white edges in the top layer, surrounding the yellow center. Then line up the white edge with the corresponding center.

- Some beginners may do freestyle cross. That will be covered in my intermediate video series, but for now that may be too time-consuming to figure out, so just stick with this.

- I added some examples from random scrambles at the end, hope this helps.
________________________

Last words.

-Remember solving the cross is one of the more intuitive steps, and so may take a while for some to grasp. Keep practicing, and soon it will become a breeze.

Once again, contact me if you have any questions. I'll be uploading the rest of the videos later on. Good luck, and keep practicing!

Any feedback will be appreciated!

  • thank you :)

  • thanks :) this helped me a lot!

  • don't teach people that cross on left is worse, maybe we will have more cross-on-left cubers in the future)

  • The best tutorial I have ever seen in the youtube! YOUR THE BEST!!! :D

  • i thought you said this was for begginers :P , emmm , i dont understand the first step ,

  • and what we should do if our cube is all messed up? :S

  • I couldn't even get the first step, which was to get the white edges around the yellow centre!!!!
