July 1982 Fashion have just got back from New York after playing at the first new music seminar with Africa Bambaataa and Haircut 100 (an interesting gig in more ways than one!) - they go into rehearsals in London for their appearance on BBC's Old Grey Whistle Test the following day. Dee Harriss the singer and main song writer in the band fails to turn up and no-one can contact him - band cancels tv show appearance.

As it turns out Dee has left the band, he just forgot to tell the others! The band immediatly return to Birmingham and hold auditions at UB40's studio, these are invite only auditions. Alan Darby turns up and band really like him as a guitarist, next in is Troy Tate and band really like him as singer - both are in the band. Less than 3 weeks after Dee quits the band the new band performs on The Old Grey Whistle Test, which goes out live from the Riverside Studios Hammersmith in London in their first ever live show and play 3 numbers - This is the first number.

  • Wow, great info. Did anybody tape any of their recordings from the NM Seminar? Would be great to see this performed with the original line up.

  • @khorrumg They should have stuck with Dee Harris, they had a good start with this and "Streetplayer" but it seems didn't manage to build on it, losing Harris was a bad move.

  • Wow, that is a great perfomance of a great song,

  • I've always liked this.

  • OOPS....Did it twice. Something went wong there. Anyway I did not recognise the band initially because Dee wasn't with them. I was possibly the first person at this rehearsal apart from band and roadies. I think I went back tomy hall to tell my mate Derek H who is now a BBC director. Soon there were loads of people and it was like a mini gig although they kept stopping and starting. Then they asked us if we wanted a show, Silly question. They then did a proper performance for us. It was amazing.

  • Tried to post a comment but it disappeared! Thank you for posting. I had it on VHS and treasured it but when i moved, I think my family got rid. Amzing guitar solo. Have fond memories...like it happened yesterday of when I was a fresher at Keele University and loving the Uni life and freedom. I wandered into the Union and saw some people moving gear around the ballroom. Went back to watch them rehearse and couldn't beleive that it was Fashion who I knew with Dee Harris.

  • yeah thanks for posting one of my favourite Old Grey sessions of all time. Great song, and amazing guitar solo. I had it on VHS and as was usual, when I moved to London, I think that's when my family got rid...but hey I'm not sure. Could never find it again.

  • Later I spoke to the band and particularly Alan. I was learning the guitar and he confirmed that he loved Jeff Beck. his solo here is very Beck -esque. He had been playing for about 8 years at this time. I met the bass player too and he had been playing for about 4 years. I think that it was the bass player who told me that Dee Harris was a very very good jazz guitarist. I have played guitar for over 30 years now and I don't think i am as good as Alan - he was that good.

  • I would love to see the other songs from this session I remember it well - great to see this

  • I was there :) Thanks so much for sharing this. I have it on VHS somewhere but no way of transferring it over.
