Two Mayas (who live in Salinas, California) talking about what they are eating. Only those foods native to Yucatan have Maya names. The rest of the names are Spanish. Here are the names most frequently mentioned: bu'ul = beans; wah = tortilla; p'ak = tomato; buk' = meat; oon = avocado. Also, k'i = tasty. The guy on the left makes a bilingual joke by saying "Don k'i" which intentionally sounds like "donkey" (burro) but also translates using a mix of Maya and Spanish to mean "Mr. Tasty." He also mentions that a another similar word, "ki'e" or "kip" means candle.

  • That was a simple yet very impressive joke. It was fricken trilingual! Anyway, I love Maya, I wish I could speak it fluently. What's a good source of text to learn the language for a beginner?

  • @ScarfaceJacket ...Try searching the web for Yucateco Mayan-Spanish web sites. Also, the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, NC has a summer course and web pages.
