Pardon me... I farted.
You're getting a fuel air deflagration, aka fireball, not a true detonation. You might be getting a fast deflagration, which may visibly appear as a fraction of a second, but unless you're using a highly sensitive epoxide or alkyl nitrate fuel, you're not getting a true fuel air explosion. In a true FAE, the fuel cloud actually detonates, which creates a very different blast effect- vastly more powerful than a fast deflagration.

Standard hydrocarbons will not be nearly sensitive enough to undergo detonation. You'll need a sensitizer such as isopropyl nitrate. Black powder would be a terrible burster, as its not brisant enough to create a fine fuel dispersion. You need a high explosive initiator to provide the original shock. Black powder will not suffice.
