  • Did you mention the third 'kingdom of ends'? Because if not could you briefly decribe it to me because it's the only Kantian principle that I don't really understand. But thank you for helping me with my ethics revision!

  • @pulsengine The Kingdom of Ends (KOE) is Kant 's way of placing the CI in a social context and putting additional emphasis on the significance of the rational will. In other words, it is not enough to simply follow moral laws; as rational agents, we should see ourselves as the originators of moral laws which would be acceptable to a potential community of rational agents. To summarize, the KOE is Kant's way of combining the 1st and 2nd formulations while emphasizing the social aspect.

  • I'm not sure that I'm processing this idea correctly. What it seems to engender in my mind is..."Do unto others as you would have them do unto you..." Am I missing something or at least close to understanding?

  • @kweju3 The CI is very similar to the golden rule, but there is a slight difference. The golden rule emphasizes "reversible" morality, i.e., treating people they way you wish to be treated. The CI goes beyond this to say that we should treat others the way we wish everyone to act toward everyone. E.g., I might speak harshly to people and would not mind if others speak harshly to me, but I might be very upset if someone spoke harshly to my wife or children. It's a broader application.
