An embryo that results from an in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedure may be tested for sickle cell disease and cystic fibrosis with pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). The fertility doctors at Georgia Reproductive Specialists can also ensure that the correct number of chromosomes is in place. By making sure the embryos are not affected by these medical conditions prior to implantation, our doctors can reduce the risk of passing on genetic abnormalities.

A good brief over-view of PGD as it relates to IVF. It is interesting to imagine where this technology will lead us in the next 10-20 years. I wonder how our society as a whole and bio-ethic's will adapt and keep up with these changes. One thing for sure; it will be interesting to watch.
