The #5 Billboard hit from 1964, as broadcast by 100,000 watt radio station 1242 kHz JOLF in Tokyo, Japan in Motorola C-Quam AM Stereo. This is perhaps the best-sounding "off-the-air" recording of analog AM Stereo I have ever heard, and it really demonstrates its ability to achieve true FM-quality audio, with the Orban Optimod-AM 9100 matrix audio processor and a wideband receiver based on the Motorola MC13022 C-Quam decoder chip.

  • That's a very clean signal! You can't get that here. Probably can't get that where you live.

  • I did get some recordings of 1600 WWRL from NYC back in 2000 when they were broadcasting in AM Stereo with the 10 kHz NRSC filter "accidentally" disabled, but their signal is only about 0.5 mV/m where I live, so my reception was not nearly "studio monitor quality" like this.

  • That's interesting. How wide was the signal?

  • Just like these Japanese stations, they were using the 9100 at its maximum audio bandwidth of 12.5 kHz.

  • I'm guessing that it didn't affect the mono signal at all?

  • It also sounded very hi-fi on a wideband mono receiver (like a GE Superadio III), but of course it wouldn't sound any better on a typical narrowband mono AM radio. I have some airchecks of WWRL in AM Stereo over on my main vwestlife channel.

  • 真是頹廢的無可救藥 但我喜歡!

  • Whether it's in stereo or mono, digital or analogue, I love this song.

  • Long live Hi-Fi AM Stereo! :) impressive sound!

  • Interesting. I would like to hear more of these Japanese stations! AM stereo was widely used in Australia until the late 1980s. I live in Sydney and there are no more stereo AM stations.
