"technically" Buddy Rich was probably a better drummer but I just don't enjoy his style of playing. But.....I could listen to krupa all day

Yes indeed. Music is so different today and there isn't much brush work on the drums anymore. I miss it. You might get a kick out of my homemade clips on here. I'm not a professional drummer but I do my best to play tributes to Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa (mostly Buddy). I really love that whole era and try to play in that style myself. I also love be-bop.

I am 75 and just caught a touch of swing. I was more raised on be-bop and hard bop. But you are right , nobody could play brushes the way Gene did with the trio's and quartets! he would play the fastest tempos while playing the left hand on all four beat and sweeping the right brush on 2 and 4. It is a lost art.

Gene always listened to Chick Webb, the black king of the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem. Sometime Lionel Hampton played the solo. Benny's band was cut at the Savoy by Chick's band and Gene bowed down to Chick. No race here, only music!

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person from the newest generation that actually enjoys listening and dancing to this kind of music. I swear I was born in the wrong time period.

This was the guy who brought all us drummers out from behind the band. You gotta respect Krupa for that fact alone. He could swing, and in that era that was what mattered most in a drummer. It's funny; Benny Goodman said that he preferred Krupa's playing over Rich or Bellson's. Krupa really was the perfect drummer for Benny's trios, quartets and big band. What a wonderful era for music. I'm 50 and I wish I had been alive back then to see it all. Not much worth seeing in music today IMHO.
