Pirates & Pinups is the first feature length documentary to take you inside the rocky evolution of the Pirate City Rollers; New Zealand's first Roller Derby League and the sport's earliest adopters outside of America and Canada.

Perfectly timed this story follows these Pacific pioneers as they navigate their own derby manifesto from inception to realization...and the rag tag collection of Pirates are not prepared to sit back and have their image or identity wrapped up and delivered to them. Uncertain of how they will be received, the small gang of skaters embark on a DIY mission to create the first official season of Roller Derby in New Zealand. What is unleashed surprises not just the Pirates, but also the diverse community that springs up around them. Derby offers them a playground for identity, an opportunity to redefine boundaries. Attitudes clash unexpectedly as these women unearth passionate competitors at their core, whilst simultaneously trying to run a democracy as friends and equals. All the while the Pirates' stage is set upon the tailwinds of Roller Derby's underground revival as it navigates and unchartered crash course into mainstream consciousness.
