Perennial Flower of the Year 2009 is Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola' http://www.gardening-tips-perennials.com/ornamentalgrass.htmland here's how to grow it and say it. This wonderful Japanese grass is perfect for the shade flower garden and is quite hardy up into USDA zone 4 This grass is readily available in garden centers and you'll be able to find several different varieties of it in better garden shops. It's perfect for organic growing as it doesn't have any significant pests or problems. It does prefer a bit of extra moisture in my garden and I wouldn't consider it a drought resistant plant by any means. Cut it to the ground in the spring and it will quickly regrow into a gorgeous specimen for summer enjoyment.
