This is my response to Carl's "A Priori: A Discussion" at http://carl-schroeder.blogspot.com/2009/03/priori-discussion.html

The phrase a priori is a Latin term which literally means before (the fact).

1. involving deductive reasoning from a general principle to a necessary effect; not supported by fact; "an a priori judgment".
2. derived by logic, without observed facts .
3. based on hypothesis or theory rather than experiment.

What Carl was really discussing was "precedent".
