The base engine in the Firebird that year was the 2.5L 4-cylinder, which nobody really wanted. That's probably the model they were quoting with that price.
I don't know anything about that other car but if it's a turbo I bet it was easily more expensive than the 2.5L setup.

Yeah that was strange. Granted, it's got a turbo, but costlier than a Firebird?? but unusual (today) nonetheless, which is why I want one!
