@TheMindfreak1980 rap started with Dj's extending drum breaks on dance songs in the clubs. These extended "beats" gave way to songs that rappers could place poetic lyrics over. Rap artists have been putting their lyrics over other people's music since the start of the game. Even the first Popular rap song "Rapper's Delight" sampled the famous bass line from Chic's "good times."
