I've been attacked by some religious moderates for being critical of the literal interpretation of the bible.

Dragons, unicorns, giants, witches, and wizards were obviously used as metaphorical language in the bible, right? Maybe you could go back in time and see if that brings comfort to a woman burning at the stake because she was accused of being a witch. Or perhaps you could try explaining that to the fundamentalists who tell children that dinosaurs were on Noah's Ark, and that the bible calls them dragons. Maybe you could try explaining photoshop to Nephilimfree when he proclaims with awe that photos of giant human skeletons prove that what the bible says about giants is true. As long as people believe in the literal interpretation (the most dangerous), I'm going to argue against the literal interpretation. No, we don't burn witches anymore, but there's plenty of people who are trying to retard our children's educations. Their primary motivation for doing that comes from interpreting the bible literally. Should they succeed, it could prove to be more terrifying than ten thousand witch trials.

To the religious moderates who have fought against creationism: I sincerely thank you. It's not my intention to prevent you from worshipping. I see religion as kind of like a firearm. It can be misused with dire consequences. I just want to help ensure that the firearm remains in the control of responsible people.

Thanks, GrapplingIgnorance, for playing the moderate. Be sure to check out his excellent videos:

  • moderates are in a way worse than the literal people. the moderates see the flaws, realize that most of the bible isn't true but still say, "well the jesus part is true". get fucking real man.

  • Bread goes in, toast comes out. You can't explain that!!!

  • Hehe. For anyone whoever gets asked about why monkeys are still around, then ask them this:

"United States started out as a British colony, so why does Great Britain exist today?"

  • i don't wanna ask a scientist, them motherfuckers lying and gettin me pissed

  • what the hell! a dozen stupid Christians against 1 atheists, this is unfair. get more Christians!

  • hey look it's the CWAT man!

  • @ProfanityKing Not trying to make an assumption here either, but it seems that in most cases people are either self-titled "atheists" or "theists" of some sort and have a particular interpretation of religious texts that promote free-will. Free-will is often a contentious issue between theists and non-theists but it really ought not to be since virtually no religious text actually promotes free-will and most actually emphasize that free-will is false. This can also be thoroughly demonstrated.

  • @ProfanityKing If you go to videolecture (net) and look up "Unconscious determinants of free decision in the human brain" you can view a lecture given by John Dylan-Haynes demonstrating the process. He also uploaded a lecture on "Decoding mental states from human brain activity" which you may find there. Even justice seems to work better if free-will isn't part of it.. but that is another huge topic.

  • @ProfanityKing Afterwards the tumor was removed the man was exhonerated of his crimes and no longer assaulted women or children. His stockpile of child pornography was handed over to police and he has never been suspected of it again. There are a ton of cases like this, so many that actually point to a pretty consistent pattern. Researchers can even pin down what you are going to decide up to 10s before you do (Soon, Dylan-Haynes etal 2008) which is an improvement on earlier results (Libet 1983)

  • @ProfanityKing Upon further questioning he tells you that he has been charged with sexual assault of a minor (his step-daughter) and are awaiting sentencing. You probably think he is looking for something wrong with his brain to get out of jail. But eventually you decide to scan his brain with CT and find a massive tumor in his frontaltemporal area consistent with compulsive and deviant sexual behavior. By the way this actually happened.

  • @ProfanityKing ...from clinical cases. A patient stumbles suffering from severe head pain and delerium. While they are waiting for a doctor to examine them they are compulsively sexually assaulting the female patients and nursing staff. Upon examination you learn that their main symptoms are head pain and confusion which may be symptomatic of meningitis. The sexual assault could be a psychogenic trait (psychological). You give them a painkiller and bottle of water. But they demand a brain scan..

  • @ProfanityKing What is black? You might offer me a sophisticated scientific explanation that involves the rodhopsin filled ganglia in the retina and the trichromatic color-opponency process that occurs in layer V1 of the occipital cortex. But most likely you will offer that it is not white. A child could explain it; black is not white. The will is a reflection of that which it is not, it is a piece of the universe (or God if you prefer). This becomes glaringly obvious when it is examined...
