Vernal Falls July 2011 - 3 hikers over the Falls

*** Update from eyewitness to event***
Three young hikers climbed over the railing for unobstructed photo of Vernal Falls. The first person, a female, stepped to the water's edge to pose for a photo which was wet smooth granite and slipped into the deeper water. The second person, a male, lunged forward to save the first but encountered the same fate on the wet granite. The 3rd person, a male who was going to take the picture also lunged out in desperation but again slipped on the wet granite surface into the water. Non of the three were in the water for more than 5 seconds before being swept over the falls. As of 7/25 not one of the bodies has been recovered and it assumed they are wedged in the rocks below and will stay that way until the river flow decrease later in the summer and into the fall. Very sad because other hikers behind the railing were yelling at the three individuals to get back behind the railing. :-(


The snowpack and resulting snow melt in the Sierras was at a record after receiving more than 800 inches. On top of the snow was a surprising summer rain which made for a spectacular and very dangerous rivers and falls. Here is was we encountered at the Vernal Falls.

A couple weeks later new broke 3 hikers when over the falls plunging to their death due to their own stupidity. Apparently three teens and early twenties climbed over the railing to get a picture without the railing in the photo. The wet algae cover nature polish granite was like mother nature's waterslide. A momentary slip on the wet surface quickly puts you into the river flow and over the falls.

Don't get me wrong. I do feel sorry for the family and their loss.. I hope they can find peace. But that's was a stupid ass thing to do. And on top of that who the fuck let them jump the rail??? One person had poor judgment and climbed over the rails then one of his friends tried to help him she slip because of the current then their other friends tried to save them and he slipped too
