J. Thomas Parsons, chair of the University of Virginia's department of microbiology, receives the 2009 Thomas Jefferson Award for scholarship. The Thomas Jefferson Award is U.Va.'s highest honor. University President John T. Casteen presents him with the award.

Parsons has helped blaze pathways in cancer research and treatments, most notably through focus on cell signaling. He and his co-principal investigator, Alan F. "Rick" Horowitz, lead the Cell Migration Consortium, which unites top researchers from around the world in a quest to understand the complexities of cell movement.

J. Thomas Parsons has been a member of the U.Va. faculty since 1974. He has served as chair of the department of microbiology since 1984. Earlier this year he was recognized as a Distinguished Scientist at U.Va., an award given by the Office of the Vice President for Research for longtime, extensive and influential service in the sciences, medicine and engineering.
