A birthday Tribute to Coach Eddie G. Robinson.

Born: Feb. 13, 1919 in Jackson, La.

High School: Graduated from McKinley High School in Baton Rouge in 1937.

College: Received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Leland College in Baton Rouge in 1941. Received Masters from Iowa in 1954; received honorary doctorates from Louisiana Tech (1983) and Yale (1997).

A life in football: Coach for 57 years at Grambling, amassing a Division I record 408 wins. ... Won 17 Southwestern Athletic Conference titles. More than 200 of his players went on to play in the National Football League -- including Super Bowl XXII MVP quarterback Doug Williams, who would ultimately succeed Robinson as Grambling's head coach in 1998. ... The Football Writers of America Coach of the Year award is named after Coach Robinson.

Personal: Married childhood sweetheart Doris Mott in 1941 and the two are still married. Robinson and his wife have two children and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

  • Eddie Robinson passed away late in the evening on April, 4th, 2007. He was 88.
