  • @warnie1 I have to agree. Tho he sings this tough aria well (Most of us tenors regard it as more difficult than the other two in the role) it simply does not suit his instrument. Listen carefully & hear the slightest bit underpitched in places & of course the b-flat gets away from him. Still, a pretty, well used voice.

  • For me, his version is more beautiful than Pavarotti's, which is saying a lot.

  • ELLA MI FU RAPITA!

  • meeldib!

  • Lyric tenors...Schipa and Tagliavini among them...have had great success in this role. Although I don't really hear Matthew as the Duke, I do enjoy his thoughtful and reflective approach to this aria. He sounds as fresh today as he sounded when I first heard him over 20 years ago during the district Met auditions at Eastern Illinois University. BRAVO!!!

  • He is singing pure belcanto - now what else do we want to hear ?

  • This is a very good performance of a lyric tenor role by someone who sounds, here, like a lyric tenor. It is not a role for a dramatic tenor, nor is it even considered a spinto role. It has its drama, but it is a lyric aria in a lyric role. Get your facts straight!

  • I was Matthews first roommate in Weller Hall at Eastern Illinois University. He was always singing where ever he was going. I never knew I was in the presence of such greatness. Needless to say, he has made it much farther than I. Great Job Matt. I hope someday I have the opportunity to hear you once again live in person. Jim Langdon
