Released on the 1st June 1967, the process of recording actually started in December the previous year, 1966 had been a traumatic year politically as well as personally and the band inexorably grew tired of touring and could not appreciate how they had developed as a live act with the hoards of screaming female concert goers that packed the stadiums and auditoriums across the world, it was to be their 3rd and final world tour with Candlestick Park San Francisco as the last goodbye.
The return to Abbey Road Studios was a welcome sabbatical as it allowed them to develop further the studio techniques they had learned on Revolver such as multiple tape reversing at different speeds, studio reverb, recording with a full orchestra, tabla drums and sitar, Terpsichore and harpsichord.
Sgt. Pepper set the benchmark for future albums in 1967 with it's daring musical structures and ideas as well as the Peter Blake inspired album cover, the rear of which propagated the mysterious demise of Paul McCartney with his back to the photographer, the album also picked up no less than 7 Grammy Awards in 1968 with everything from Best Album of the year to Best Album Cover, Graphic Arts to Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s), a pretty remarkable achievement even by today's standards.
