Short tutorial on how to do the cello bow/guitar-intro of "Svefn-g-englar" by Sigur Rós, for those who may be interested! I'm not saying this is how Jónsi does it, but it's a techinque that works for me.

  • what kind of Cello bow do you use?

  • @MaggiZkater i have no idea. I bought it a long time ago on eBay. It was very cheap, maybe 20 $, so I'm guessing it's low quality. You might get a better tone with a better bow, - I haven't tried, so I really don't know.

  • Does the rosin rub off on the strings making it a bugger to play with a regular plectrum? Also, does it make a mess on the body of your guitar?

I only ask because a mate of mine who plays violin (beautifully :3 ) has a load of white, powdery-looking stuff on his violin just under where he bows. I could just ask him, but we play different instruments and I'd figure you know.

  • @kenan6346 I usually draw the bow at the same point on the string, and that's a point where I usually don't use the plectrum. It will leave some rosin on the strings, but you can remove most of it with a finger and I haven't had any problems with it. Yes, it will leave some rosin on the body and the pick-ups, but it's not a big problem (for me, that is).

  • query...without the red box...does it work?

and does the fact i've got a sg matter?

  • @Sanisaninja sure, but you'll need some sort of distortion effect.

  • It looks so cool.....i havent got an electric guitar :(

There's no space in my house and my parents think it's too much noise! It sounds so cool though! And it looks easy...but I can only dream...i'm so jealous.

    >.<

  • @fouss14 it's not that it won't work but using a cello bow might be easier because it's longer so it's easier to handle. plus coming from playing both cello and violin, cello bows (at least to me) seem to be able to withstand more force without breaking hairs all the time.

  • Why won't a violin bow work?

  • Awesome

  • How 2 can guys not like this?!

  • yep good job :)

  • Thumbs up mate, looks really impressive!

  • Wow...i am fucking impressed. Good Job!

I would have you in my band any day! Come to elmont! Show my friend and i all you can do and make us shit our pants! Lol!

    Cheers.

  • Nice. I love that song, and knowing how it's played adds just that much more appreciation to the simple nuances of the music that most people overlook while focusing on the whole.

  • Awesome dude. Jonsi would be proud ^^
