This video is about my daughter. She went on Tyra Banks because of morbid obesity. She had tried many different ways to lose weight. She weighed over 600 pounds. No, it was not all from excess eating. A lot of weight gain can be attributed to serious emotional trauma. A doctor and hospital was found that was willing to do a gastric bypass. The bypass was successful. As a result, 428 pounds were lost!

AFTER THE BYPASS, to remove about 50 pounds of excess skin that was causing complications, a surgical procedure known as a 360 degree total body lift was done. Basically, this meant my daughter was cut from the left side of her navel to the right side of the navel. As a complication to this surgery, my daughter developed a very serious infection throughout her wound and in her blood causing life threatening sepsis.

The infection was known as Methicillin Resistant Staph Aureas, or M.R.S.A. This staph infection is THE number one most life threatening infection when it gets into the blood. My daughter barely clung onto life and actually required resuscitation on more than one occasion. The severity of her wound infection requried nurses to use aseptic technique several times a day to scrub, irrigate and drain the area; followed by extensive debridement and removal of the infected tissue; and then the wound was packed with antibiotic soaked gauze. After this technique was inadequate in total infection eradication, the nurses then applied antibiotic soaked sponges attached to multiple wound vacs which help facilitate continuous 24 hr per day drainage of the wounds.

This video is in rough form. We plan to submit a more detailed video at a later time. We simply believe people need to realize when you remain in a hospital facility for seven months, many things in life outside of the hospital continue. Not only did my daughter, Misty, lose her grandmother during her battle with M.R.S.A., she also lost her aunt, her apartment, and her automobile. The world continues.

One significant fact is Misty's daughter, Tiara, had to constantly see her mom in pain. She had to see her connected to feeding tubes, IV tubes, wound vac tubes, and live with someone else for those seven months. At one point, she even had to tell her mom goodbye before surgery because they did not think Misty would make it through.

In addition to the medical stress Misty was enduring, she watched me, her mom, go from one hospital to the other to check on my own mom, who was dying on the other side of town. Misty ached, and still does, because she could not say goodbye to her grandma.

All of this was to have about 50 pounds of excess skin removed. Was it worth it? After you watch the video......feel free to send comments. I am tracking most of them via YouTube. Thanks...and may you have a Healthy New Year in 2011!

  • I remember seeing her story & wondered if she lost her weight. This is so sad. Overweight ppl have this surgery to assist them in losing weight & once they reach their goal they have access skin. If the insurance paid for the surgery to begin with why don't they cover the skin removal surgery that they obviously need so it is done by a plastic surgeon who is qualified & knows what they are doing?

  • @dearshelley101 That's another story. Initially we went on Tyra Banks and they sent Misty to a hospital in Houston. Her surgery was supposed to be paid for....along with nutritional counseling....check ups....etc. because she agreed to allow The Learning Channel to film her surgery and life and did not receive compensation. To say the least, they did not pay for her surgery like we were told. Live and Learn.

  • From some of the comments here you would think that this video is something negative.. I found the video perfectly fine, n it's obivous that you are just trying to warn others that they should check the credentials of their doctors, and tell Misty's story.. Some really hateful people on youtube. Sigh.. I can't really relate to this story in particular as I've always been pretty skinny, but that doesn't mean that I can't empathise with people going through this. Keep it up jpdebbie.. :)

  • @CrownJewel32 I agree Misty is not a perfect Angel, but there is no need to call names. May you never have a family member you love go through something like this.

  • @lilmizzwagga102 Thanks for the nice comment CrownJewel32

  • @CrownJewel32 No comment about your name-calling.. I truly hope no one in your family is ever obese. Only then will you understand.

  • @myiphonechannel No comment. None warranted.

  • @pizzamom555 I agree. I should have used a script. However, the video was initially done to help a friend of my daughter realize what she went through. I was simply trying to explain it. One day we will redo it......

  • @cfanderson30 Thanks for your comments. You are correct it was two different surgeries. I made sure to say her bypass was successful. I just could not think of a title that would get the attention of obese people who may not have known to check for plastic surgeon credentials. We didn't realize she needed a plastic surgeon because the doctor had done skin removal on others.

  • @oliverliew90 Thank you for the kind words. They are very much appreciated. People like you help us deal with the others. Blessings!

  • Well it's her fault, partially. All could be avoided of she started working out on a very small step, like going for a walk once in a while, and work up to everyday, then power walking, so on and so forth.

  • I am sorry that this happened to Misty, but I think the title is pretty misleading. She did not fall ill from the weight loss surgery, fell ill due to the plastic surgery. Two different surgery, done at two different times.
