Focus on Giving: Katherine Long, The Financial Literacy Project

Katherine Long decided to found the Financial Literacy Community Project after a serendipitous encounter with Mimi on a flight from Beijing to Hong Kong. On the five-hour flight, Katie realized that both she and Mimi recognized the catastrophic effects of financial illiteracy among youth and saw the unmet desire in college students to put their professional interests to work to make a real impact on society. FLCP was her solution to bridge the gap. Katie is currently a junior at the University of Pennsylvania, receiving dual degrees in economics at the Wharton School and philosophy at the College of Arts and Sciences.
Katie is passionate about social entrepreneurship and believes in the power of youth to create a sustainable impact in communities. Previously, she was a writer and college-life reporter at Seventeen, a contributor at Teen Vogue, and an editorial intern at Rolling Stone China. In 2008, she organized for Barack Obama's presidential campaign in New Hampshire by drawing on the enthusiasm and power of youth. She was director of the 800-strong Exeter Social Service Organization and founded Haute magazine, the nation's first high school fashion magazine. Outside of FLCP, she is an executive board member of Penn Fashion Week, planning committee board member of the Exeter Alumni Association of Philadelphia, operations director of Wharton Entrepreneurship Conference, and a member of Delta Sigma Pi.
