Bernstein was so enthusiastic about music! Dizzy Gillespie's autobiography tells of a jazz bassist (I think Stanley Clark) playing in a group in a jazz club in NYC when someone ran onto the bandstand and held his ear against the instrument for a few minutes, listening to what was being played on the bass. The bassist kept playing. When the person left the bandstand, the other musicians told the bass player that it had been Leonard Bernstein, excited and happy with what he was hearing played!

My friend, the late Hale Smith (1925-2009) was a close friend of Eric Dolphy; such footage of him is rare indeed. Thank you for posting this!!
