Earth Day, the annual day of environmental action and awareness, was first held on April 22, 1970. This past April 22nd, we finally ventured into the woods behind our house and pulled 4 putrid truck tires/mosquito farms out of the mud, along with about 200 pounds of scrap metal, engine parts, and farm equipment. The place used to be a dairy farm, and I guess "out of sight" was "out of mind". If it were still the 70's, cleaning up the woods would have been "outta sight" in a whole different way.

Here's a clip of The Crying Indian from the early 70's. OK, so Chief Iron Eyes Cody wasn't a real Native American after all. That didn't stop the ad campaign from having a tremendous effect back then. And it's no less relevant today.

  • iNeedzAll, You'd be amazed how many Indians actually resent the term Native American. Most of the Natives were here loooooong before Amerigo Vespucci charted some of the coastlines to the South & North of the "discoveries" of Columbus.

  • Does no one care that #1. That "Indian" is Italian, and In fact an actor that portrayed Indians in western movies. Or 2, that Keep America Beautiful is owned by an aluminum can manufacturer. This whole add is basically an attempt to guilt trip people into picking up this companies trash for them.

  • Lorax would have shed a single tear at the disposable diapers and SUVs

  • @Fallout394

    1. No, the message is just as important. Most people aren't autistic and won't get distracted by something like that. 2. Just false.

  • @10TimesTheValue Are you sure you didn't get Indian and native american switched around?

  • I know that this PSA was supposed to be serious, but I laugh every time I look at the actor's face. But, hey, their hearts were in the right place... I think...

  • @thatbme35 lol. Get over yourself. My great grandmother was full Cherokee, and she taught me a lot of things, and also to have respect and show love and mercy to EVERYONE, whether they wronged you or not. I also have African blood in me. My great grandfather's father was a slave; I know how people can be, but I have learned to forgive. Calling people names won't help. And yes, I know that you're probably a troll, and honestly don't care, but this is for all those freaking out about it

  • This is so filled with stereotypes I don't even. . .

  • @Fallout394 If someone buys a product in a can and then throws the can on the ground, it's the buyer's trash, not the manufacturer.

  • 0:46 the best part

  • I wonder what river this commercial was filmed on-could it be the Cuyahoga which was kind of the poster boy for pollution in the early 70s? does anyone know?

  • Just curious anyone know the river he's paddling_Im guwessing it is the Cuyahoga
