Maija Hirvanen's Our Social Democratic Bodies takes an incisive look at how we function in contemporary society and the era we live in. The piece is a tragically comic and comically tragic choreographic portrait of us, modern people.

The physicality of the performance is built upon elements that evoke strong responses in us, or contingencies that are utterly impossible. It interrogates systems in which we participate upside-down.

Our Social Democratic Bodies is the first in a series of performances by Hirvanen called Operation Us. Purely through physical art, it explores similarities and differences in the philosophical perceptions of people raised to believe in democratic principles. Operation Us is a chain of interpretations, commentaries and fantasies on what truly matters in life.
