While I know many compassionate folks who agree with some of their basic goals, PETA act like the fundamentalist evangelicals of the environmental movement. A basic issue--treat animals humanely--is misrepresented, filtered through a great marketing scheme and becomes propaganda which distracts people who do care from more urgent issues and alienates those who dont care (yet) by casting a shadow of irrationality and extremism over everyone who is advocating to help animals and the environment
Hey twopoint0, Im actually talking about exactly the opposite. Id like to see everyone have more compassion for humans and animals alike and for everyone to start taking serious action over the environment. Im as disheartened by comments like the sealer getting a good hit as I am by PETAs simplistic spin-doctoring. This is not a simple two-sided issue, in spite of what theyd have you think, and that we should be very very suspicious of anyone or any group who says that it is.
This is exactly why, as an Animal Collective die-hard, I make a point of knowing as little about their personal lives as possible... because they are stupid.

PETA was obviously going for shock value. Why else would they actually show a seal being beaten to death?
