It's been over a year since My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic was aired on television; October of 2010, to be more exact. Since then, its popularity has skyrocketed, its fan base ranging from both males and females young and old. Never before has there been a show that gained a massive following in such a short amount of time like this one. And never has there been a show with a community like this one that has affected so many people's lives for the better.
Everywhere in this community you'll encounter stories of people whose lives have been changed because of the MLP fandom. Stories of hope, triumph, inspiration, friendship. Some stories are about people who have had personal problems that haunted them for years. Those people were finally able to face their problems and conquer them with help from the positive messages the show conveyed, and also from the words of encouragement from other people in the community. Others tales are cries for help; people who felt alone and unwanted by everyone around them; people who were on the edge and were about to give up. Those cries for help were answered by outstretched arms from people that, by all standards, would be considered complete strangers. But that didn't matter; a fellow brony --- a fellow human being needed help, and without a second thought those strangers offered their love and support and in doing so, saved a soul from falling off the edge.
Then there are the stories of illustrators, musicians, artisans --- artists of all sorts who took inspiration from the show and those who created fan works for it. Some of these artists have been working their craft for years, while others have never even sketched, played a chord, or held a needle in their hands. Some of these artists who were inspired by their idols have risen to that same level of popularity themselves, and they together inspire a whole new lot of people, continuing the cycle.
But sometimes, the stories are as simple as someone meeting new friends and forming bonds through a common interest: candy colored ponies.
The show's inherently positive, friendly nature seems to bring out the best in people. And with the level of connectivity everyone now has with one another, gone are the days when the line between "real-life" friends and "Internet" friends was solid and clear. It has become a matter of whether our friends are available or unavailable; "online" or "offline". It is through this connectivity that this fandom came to rise, and it's through this fandom that so many lives were changed and innumerable bonds made.
If it wasn't for the messages of encouragement I've gotten from so many people, I wouldn't be here doing what I love today. Sometimes, something as simple as giving acknowledgement and thanks can do so much for someone. So I'd like to make one small request to everyone watching: This holiday season, take a short amount of time to write a short message to the people within the community who have given you inspiration, hope, help, or their friendship. It doesn't have to be long; a couple sentences will do. Let them know what they've done for you, and when you're done ask them to also do the same thing you've done to someone else.
It's been over a year since this fandom came to be; a year since this show and its charm touched the hearts of thousands and thousands. A year since we've proved that friendship is magic... and worldwide.
