I don't know if it's a good idea to leave your iPhone on your dash if you live in Arizona, or Death Valley, or any other place where it could melt. But otherwise it seems like a cool app to have.
Does it use any data when your using GPS?

Good comparison. The only thing I experienced is that if you are in a weak signal area on the cell phone it looses track while the tomtom will hold the signal even through canyon roads where there would be no cell signal.
