the swamp park is a great facility which is dedicated to educating people about this natural treasure and about the people who used to inhabit the swamp before it was taken from them by the gov't to make a park. it is important not to let the stories and customs of this unique area die. generalizing these people as hicks is a very narrow-minded outlook
the southern accent comes from the mixture of english with the accent of the scots-irish who settled in the south because of the climate. this tour guide may or may not be laying it on thick but i know from experience that there are people near the swamp who do talk this way; with this strong of an accent
it is sad that you were afraid of facing such a natural setting because of a canoe that is "wobbly"...canoes tend to be wobbly...it is interesting how people make derogatory statements about people who are very intelligent but who talk differently. many of the pronunciations of southern people, especially those accents from the swamp area, are more closely related to the english spoken by settlers.
"hic" is a rather derogatory term. you will find if you research the history of the english language that there are particular reasons the people in the swamp area talk the way they do, and have particular customs. you can cosider yourself lucky to have had the experience of being around authentic southern people who are full of color and charm. .
I'm a former guide and can't stand someone putting on the dog and a little syrup to their accent. 'The swamp has enough to talk about without a lot of bull and put on. You can have humor but teach so it can be passed on and not lost. Lamar Hall had as much humor as anyone but knew what he was talking about.
Lol, this is the guide we had yesterday! We were the last tour of he day so he took us out for a walk to a gator nest! He told some of these exact same stories!
@elsydee No shit? explain more of that to me in a message, please. About the southern accent.
