Here I am riding down the elevator in the church tower of St Nicolas, Hamburg. The church was blitzed in WWII but the tower remains with this lift to the top for an all-encompassing view over the city. The viewing platform is 76m/230ft up, with a gargoyle at every window. Photos on display show the city before, during and after the war. Placards blame the bombings on the warmongering Nazis who, after bombing the likes of Warsaw and Coventry without mercy, had reaped the whirlwind. Back on the ground and in the old crypt are more photos, some stained glass recovered from the ruins and a film about the war which altogether make the place a tribute to peace and a warning against war.
That looks like it could be a scene from THE KINGDOM. Where's Udo?
