Siskel and Ebert review the 1998 drama film, American History X which is about a man who is a Neo-Nazi played by Edward Norton who hates anf blames everything on Jews and Non-Whites for his problems and goes to jail after a brutal killing that he did. He soons realizes that his hate never helped him and during years in jail that no longers hates any Non-Whites anymore. But the problem is that his yonger problem played by Edward Furlong is also a Neo-Nazi and continues to hate Non-Whites still. Both Siskel and Ebert liked the film but Gene Siskel liked it a lot more then Roger Ebert though.

  • RIP siskel, RIP ebert's voice

  • With all sympathy to Siskel looking sick here.

But the scene with Norton's dad being against affirmative action being a path to hate was the dumbest part of the movie. Most people who know anything about higher education know affirmative action is stupid.

  • how did norton get so ripped for this film? roids?

  • the dinner table scene wasnt like the reason for him to become a skinhead, its just where edward norton's character (i think it was him) thinks he was introduced to racist ideology. so its neither a "quick explanation" nor "how he became a skinhead", it's just the first time he started to think about it, and one of countless reasons why he became a radical.

  • The main vocal point that everybody seem to remember was race but if you really watched this film.I think that family was even a stronger point. The ones within that family got and held there own in a sense of a strong reality within the acting. This was a great film.

  • this movie was unbelievably close to being truly fantastic. i would have preferred if the father had remained an anonymous figure so that the viewer could see him as derek did, as a godlike figure who was unfairly struck down. giving him a face and a voice took that opportunity away. norton and furlong both had fantastic performances, and the woman who played derek's girlfriend was unbelievably good (and underrated), but while coming close, the film didn't quite make it as far as it could have.

  • I for one honestly think that this movie should be shown in full uncensored length to all HS seniors, especially with the way racism seems to be makin a strong comeback in alot of places. Take where i live for example. Growin up in NY we always had Martin Luther King Jr, day off. Not here, they get the first day of hunting season instead, But if you are black you can take the day off and it would be excused!!! WTF !! that is what it has come to. SAD SAD SAD !

  • The reason nortons character left the "movement " is because after they raped him, it was his black high school teacher that consoled him, and a black inmate that kept him alive fro the rest of his remaining sentence. Or did everybody miss that part on his walk out of the prison. I suggest some of you watch the movie again and really listen this time. The one guy that should have stood in line to shank him, went and stood up for him. They never show it but it is said.

  • @charlesvan13 also when Norton is interviewed about his fathers death.he already sounds like hes been a skinhead for awhile rather then becoming a nazi because of his fathers death.

  • The Sisko does not like John Connors paper :)

    Seriously...great movie and post :)

  • Was this Siskel's last review? He's so slow because of his illness by now...

  • Good feck, they give away way too much in reviews on this show.
