I've been shooting still photographs of ospreys hunting in our backyard lake and nearby trees for quite a while now. But I've always felt that I've deprived friends and contacts of the thrill of seeing these magnificent raptors in action as they go about dive bombing for kills!
So I dug up the old Handycam, and waited for an osprey's regular visit (one comes in the morning and then again in the afternoon). Sho 'nuff, I soon spotted this magnificent bird circling our lake. I tracked it, hoping it would spot a fish (it did) and dive for it (again, it did), and slowly fly away so I can track it go out of camera range (it did not but instead decided to come over to right where I am and give me a "fly by salute" ala "Top Gun!" Haha! I had to fumble with the digicam's zoom lever as the osprey flew too close and I had to zoom out).
NOTE:
This is one continuous shot! And other than the "fade in" and "fade out" effect at
the start and end, no "splicing" or any other sort of editing was used. I did not even put in a musical score (I thought about it), and decided to go "ambient sound" (ala CBS' "Sunday Morning" extro segment).
Enjoy this pure, unadulterated capture of an osprey trying to survive in an urban setting.
