The RWC is the 3rd biggest sporting event in the world! With the next one on it's way... I'm so excited, I can't wait!

But do you know the history behind the RWC? Let me help you out :)

Talks of the 1st RWC started around the 1980's. In 1983 the Australian Rugby Union and the New Zealand Rugby Union both submitted written proposals to stage the tournament. (The funny thing is that they were not aware of each other's proposals and sadly both were turned down)

2 Years later a vote was held in Paris. South Africa who at that time could not compete, due to the sports boycott voted in favor of the tournament and the end result came down to 2 votes to 6.

In 1987 it was time to crown the 1st Rugby World Cup Champion!!!

Australia and New Zealand had the honor of hosting the tournament and after 32 matches the All Blacks became the 1st ever Rugby World Cup Champions!

Since then there have been 5 more RWC tournaments and the 6th one is about to kick off in New Zealand.

There you have it, now you know a little bit more about the RWC and how it started out.

Be so kind and share your favorite RWC memory, just post a comment below :)

  • Wilko's drop kick in the 2003 final.

    He's gonna do it again!!

  • Kobus Wiese walking up to Lomu at the 95 final!

    Go on the Bokke!!

  • France's upset of New Zealand in the 1999 finals.

  • @schwabbamoose Without a doubt that was one of the greatest moments in our short history. Even though we were losing and had no chance of winning, that play alone showed the potential of US rugby. Let's hope for some great moments like that again this year.

  • As an Eagles fan, my favorite moment was definitely Z dusting Habana in 07. Straight scary speed.
