A groundbreaking was held for the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) sidewalk project June 2, 2010 at the corner of N. 18th and Green Streets near Fannin Elementary School.
In October 2007, the City of Abilene was successful in obtaining two grants to improve bicycle and pedestrian safety for school-age children. The funding, awarded by the Texas Transportation Commission, went to two projects: construction of a sidewalk along Green Street near Fannin Elementary School and the development of a master plan for other sidewalks near schools within the Abilene Independent School District (AISD). The projects are fully funded through the grants.
SRTS projects typically include sidewalk construction, intersection improvements. pedestrian and bicycle improvements, and similar improvements. Non-infrastructure projects, such as education and awareness programs as well as planning for pedestrian and bicycle routes, can also be funded through this program.
