Penn recently adapted and directed a film starring Emile Hirsch based on Krakauer's Into the Wild, the true story of a young man who disappeared in the Alaskan wilderness. This episode includes music from the INTO THE WILD soundtrack composed and performed by Eddie Vedder.

ICONOCLASTS airs Thursdays at 10pm on Sundance Channel.

@stevealaska73 To begin, anyone who's fond of Thoreau's philosophies is by definition a hopeless romantic. What does this mean? It means CM entertained an extremely unrealistic belief about the NOBILITY OF MAN to be found in "THE WILDERNESS," a belief he adopted from Thoreau whose wilderness was a gentle wooded lot just 1.5 miles from his family home. Thanks to Thoreau's fantasy many other distressed people have disappeared into the wild, seeking existential relief. Nature is a BITCH with claws.

@stevealska73 OK, so I muffed the timeline a bit, the point is, CM didn't graduate from Emory or Harvard or kindergarten or whatever as a certified, veteran wilderness expert. You think Ivy League = actual common sense?! Ha! HA HA!!! He had a decent personality but romantic delusions about nature and poor real world judgment. If you wanna celebrate someone worthwhile, how 'bout ANYONE who ONLY risks their life unwillingly to save someone else, like Coast Guard or Marines or Mommy. U R deluded.
