Despite all the scientific breakthroughs and Nobel Prizes for discoveries, scientists seem to be no nearer to a possible answer to their main question - why did the universe appear? RT sat down to talk to Aleksey Filippenko, an American astrophysicist and professor of astronomy at the University of California, Berkeley, CA.

He was the member of the team that received 2011 Nobel Prize for discovering the dark energy that is speeding up the expansion of the entire universe. And he believes that it could have sprung into existence without any divine help whatsoever.

You clearly don't have the slightest understanding of the subject matter. We understand the 4%, which is what we can see (the observable universe). The 96% is measurable, however, we don't yet know exactly what it is. An analogy would be weighing yourself and arriving at a number without knowing all of the ingredients that comprise your body. You can tell me your weight, however, you cannot tell me exactly what your body is comprised of.

Everything can be explained eventually, every single thing. There is so much out there that we might not know in our life time but before the earth is destroyed i believe we will understand more than our minds can even imagine right now in this present state of life. But it will be explained one day.
