Bentonite is an inexpensive clay additive that you can use to clarify mead or wine. It gives astonishing results and is easy to do. More mead making stuff at:

  • When is the best time to add the bentonite? I have 4 gallon bottles now racked, some are still a bit fermenting but not that fast anymore, do you have to wait untill the entire process has stopped? And then rack it + bentonite, and rack it again when its clear and then bottle? Thanks in advance.

  • @murray821 I generally use bentonite when its near bottling time. Its not mandatory, but you have it right rack +bentonite, rack again when clear, then bottle.

  • FETCH ME MY FINEST MEAD WENCH!!! (Wench): But sir, you drank all of it...

THEN RAID THE NEIGHBORS! I KNOW THEY HAVE GALLONS OF THE STUFF!

  • @TheWhoaDude lol!

  • @Waterman117 Yes very bad because that introduces oxygen, which is a very awful thing to do at this stage trust me. I've had a batch of beer that got oxygenated and it tasted a bit like rust or something. since I've been very careful and not had any more F#$@in rusty beer.

  • @TheWhoaDude But... why has the mead gone?

  • @epicfantasy definitely cloudy, but probably ok. How does it smell? And, I reallly dont think it is done fermenting. We are at the risk of exploding this container. How long was it in the fermenter before you transferred it. I would siphon into a new fermenter with airlock and let it settle for a while. weeks

  • @birdman5050 probably normal. can you send me a pic? It probably just needs to be siphoned into a new jug. You siphon the liquid and leave all the sediment behind. Clears it up nicely.

  • @drummerthingx I wasnt going to dig up some ash....I have tons of it at my house...from organic burns for my grape vineyard. Its also the same ash they use for ceramic slip....for molding.

  • @drummerthingx so if its millions of years old? Its better for you? Clay and ash? I think they use that for brick making and soap....which clears solids as well.....So this volcano....you get this stuff from....Is it in Hawaii, Europe, Japan?

  • @drummerthingx volcanic ash...or can I use regular ash I burnt from my trees out on the pasture...would that work...its ash....and its sterile...
