When shooting for Humphrey Jenning's film "Listen To Britain" the Crown Film Unit had the services of Dame Myra Hess at London's National Gallery. After editing, much of the footage remained un-used. John Trumper a young assistant film editor at Crown (based in Beconsfield Studios) and a pianist, took it upon himself to edit the remaining shots into this short film. Some shots are in fact repeated.

It is now available on Beulah Yesterday's Britain DVD "Classical Music in the Forties" . This also includes Dame Myra playing Mozart, Sir Malcolm Sargent playing Britten's Young persons Guide tot he Orchestra, Dennis Brain playing Beethoven's Horn Sonata and Arthur Benjamin's specially composed ballet coming to life in "Steps of the Ballet"

  • fabulous pianist!! and she certainly means business at 8:29!!!

  • Absolutely stunning. One of the best interpretations ever

  • Floored. Wow. What a delight...

  • She attacks this with guisto, remarkable. I was in the national gallery a few weeks ago to see ida Haendel, and i thought of Myra whilst i was there!

  • An excellent performance here! Hess is often overlooked these days, it seems, when thought of great pianists come up. Most people think of Rubinstein, Horowitz, Valentina Lisitsa, or Martha Argerich. All are great, and Hess should definitely be counted among them!

  • A inspirational insight to a great musical personality of distinction and of historic significance.
