On November 23, 2009 in Washington, DC, dozens of committed people of color largely Asian Americans and Latinos, confronted the office of Rep. Joe Wilson to tell him that it is not okay to prohibit people from seeking medical care based on immigration status, and that immigrants are part of this country.

Si se puede! and "Hal-su-eet-dah!" said the crowd of people of color as part of a delegation from CASA de Maryland and the National Korean American Service & Education Consortium (NAKASEC).

That same day in San Francisco, hundreds of people joined at a vigil at Speaker Pelosis office to urge her, a key negotiator in the upcoming conference committee, to advance and fortify her position as a leader who fought against anti-immigrant amendments to pass the House bill, in the face of extreme pressure from both sides of the aisle and the White House

Hey hey ho ho, the five year bar has go to go, chanted Californians to reflect the strength and urgency of immigrant community voices in health reform. The crowd urged Congress and the White House to repeal the federal five year waiting period for low-income legal immigrants in Medicaid who have had legal status for less than five years.
