Track 8. "Isn't It Romantic?" (Rodgers, Hart) -- 3:50
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Isn't It Romantic?" is a popular song and part of the Great American Songbook. The music was composed by Richard Rodgers, with lyrics by Lorenz Hart. It has a 32-bar chorus in ABAC form. Alec Wilder, in his book American Popular Song: The Great Innovators 1900-1950 calls it "a perfect song."
It was introduced by Jeanette MacDonald and Maurice Chevalier in the Paramount film Love Me Tonight (1932). It has since been recorded numerous times, with and without vocals, by many jazz and popular artists. It has also since been featured in a number of movies, including several other Paramount films, such as Preston Sturges' The Lady Eve (1941) and The Palm Beach Story (1942), and several Billy Wilder films, including A Foreign Affair
(1948) and Sabrina (1954).
In Love Me Tonight, the song is used in an innovative sequence in which it is first sung by Maurice Chevalier, a tailor, and then taken up by others (his customer, a cabby, a composer, a troop of soldiers, a band of gypsies) and is finally heard and sung by a princess, played by Jeanette MacDonald.
The lyrics in the film are not the same as those in the published version.
  • Another very fine and romantic video by Maureen712. What a talent she has, especially as the spring moons begin to shower the earth with their romance on moonlit evening.
  • @serenitysprnigs Thank you very much, Ohevin! I've missed you. It was so nice to hear from you again. I love the comment you made. Sometimes I think you are more of a hopeless romantic than I am! ;-)
  • @mettanc Hi Michael, Great to hear from you again! It is amazing how Rod Stewart resurrected his career with his fabulous CD's. Very nicely arranged and performed, he deserves the success he achieved singing the old, great standards.
    Hope you have a great weekend, too! I'm eagerly awaiting the first sign of spring.
  • Hey Maureen! The January moon is filling the South Dakota skies with it's beautiful and lovely light. Would you like to dance under this special light of love with me?? Put on your dancing slippers and meet me over the skies of Wisconsin. Will be waitin for you .......
  • @Maureen712 Yes, sweet heart, the October moon light is once again waiting for you and I to dance, to dance the night away with such romance that would even make the stars swoon and sigh with delight.
    Ohevin:)
  • wonderful.
  • @comanchegirl1 My pleasure! I would love to see more romance in the movies along with more singing and dancing. Those are the kinds of movies I grew up with and I miss them. I'm so glad the movies that are popular today weren't the movies I saw as a child. I would not have the appreciation for romance, music and dancing if they had been missing when I was a child.
