Buddhist art is a psychology tour de force in capturing balance, form and harmonics to create a "peaceful" state of the viewer. And Buddhist don't sacrifice anything to a statue--the statue is a reminder of the possiblilty for each of us to be Awakened--or a Buddha. Making offerings and bowing to the statue is a sign of respect, like lowering your eyes at your grandmothers funeral. Provided, of course, that you had a family and some eduction which your comment precludes.
Yes of course it's peaceful, it is not able to make war, it's a statue, which can't hear, can't smell or can't perform any miracles even if you sacrifice the whole world to it.
