Travel back to the 1920s on the Nevada Northern Railway at East Ely, called the "Best Preserved Standard Gauge Steam Railroad in the United States." The Nevada Northern, a common carrier, was built to haul copper ore from the mines at Ruth and Copper Flat to the smelter at McGill. Owned by the mining company, the railroad ended up as part of Kennecott Copper in the 1970s, and was subsequently shut down when copper prices fell. Preserved almost exactly as it was in the 1950s, the railroad now boasts restored original steam and diesel locomotives operating in their original setting. On photographers' weekends in February, the railroad recreates the "good old days." Steam locomotives 93 and 40 pull vintage cars to simulate the freight and passenger trains of the 1920s, while Alco RS-3 109 recreates a typical ore train of the 1970s. In this video both steam locomotives are seen on the desolate main line east of Ely, and on the Keystone Branch which ran up Robinson Canyon to the mines (the latter featuring the railroad's only tunnel). The diesel train is on the ore line bypass, built around the city, as the original main line traveled down through the city streets -- residents weren't thrilled to have 20,000 tons of copper ore per day trundling by their houses, so the railroad built the bypass. Note the special work train hauled by engine 93, complete with operable steam-powered crane.

  • VERY NICE DONE--THANKS

  • The ALCo RS3 (RS2?) doesn't appear to be an steam engine.

  • I love the sound these locomotives make when they're under load and on a grade. Remarkable! Thanks for the video.

  • I love the video. I just wish #40 had whistled a lot more. She's my 2nd favorite steam locomotive.

  • 5 stars!
